The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Histogram tool from the Analysis ToolPak in Microsoft Excel, the following message may appear:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, a message similar to the following appears:

EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module ANALYS32.XLL at
   0137:3ff9101a.

   -or-

EXCEL caused a general protection fault in module ANALYSIS.XLL at
   0005:3157.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Excel 5.0, and you click Details, the second message appears.

CAUSE

Data analysis tools from the Analysis ToolPak work only with data from a single worksheet at a time. Therefore, you must ungroup the worksheets before you use any tool in the Analysis ToolPak, including the Histogram tool.

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You group two or more worksheets.

    -and-

  • You click Data Analysis on the Tools menu, double-click Histogram in the Analysis Tools list.

    -and

  • You specify an output range that is on the active worksheet in the Histogram dialog box.

    -and

  • You select Chart Output in the Histogram dialog box, and then click OK.

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Move the data that you want to use in the data analysis to one

worksheet and ungroup the worksheets before you perform the data
          analysis.

Method 2: In the Histogram dialog box, specify an output range that is not
          on the active worksheet.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION
