The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft Excel 5.0 or 7.0 workbook in the Microsoft Excel 97 file format, you may receive the following warning:

   <Workbook name> contains sound notes.

If you save <Workbook name> in Microsoft Excel 97 format, the sound
notes will be permanently lost. To keep the sound notes, make a copy of
the workbook, and then open the copy only in Microsoft Excel 5.0 or
   Microsoft Excel 95.

Do you want to save this workbook in Microsoft Excel 97 format?

where <Workbook name> is the name of the workbook you are saving.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all of the following conditions are true:

  • You open a Microsoft Excel 5.0 or 7.0 workbook that contains a sound note in Microsoft Excel 97.

        -and-

  • You subsequently delete the worksheet that contains the sound note.

        -and-

  • You save the workbook in the Microsoft Excel 97 file format.

Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows does not convert sound notes from files that you saved in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel. When you delete the worksheet in which you originally inserted the sound note, and you then save the workbook in the Microsoft Excel 97 format, Microsoft Excel does not keep track of the sound note.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, delete the worksheet that contains the sound note, and then save the file in the "Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook" format. Then, close the workbook and reopen it. After you reopen the file, save the workbook in the Microsoft Excel 97 format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
