  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you save a document based on any of the templates that are stored in the Valupack\Template\Excel folder on the Microsoft Office 97 compact disc, you may receive the following alert message:

'<Template Name>' was created in a previous version of Microsoft Excel.
Do you want to update it to the new format?

where <Template Name> is the name of the template you are using.

If you click Yes, the file is saved in the Microsoft Excel 97 file format.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the templates in the Valupack\Template\Excel folder on the Microsoft Office compact disc are not in the Microsoft Excel 97 file format; they are in the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 file format.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, save the templates in the Microsoft Excel 97 file format before you use them.

The following steps show you how to open the Loan.xlt file and save it in Microsoft Excel 97 format.

  1. Insert the Microsoft Office compact disc into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Start Microsoft Excel.

  3. On the File menu, click Open.

  4. In the Look In list, click the Microsoft Office compact disc.

  5. In the File name box, type the following:

          <Drive letter>\Valupack\Template\Excel

where <Drive letter> is the CD-ROM drive letter.

For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive D, type the following:

        D:\Valupack\Template\Excel

A list of Microsoft Excel templates appears.

  6. Click Loan, and then click Open.

If a message appears that warns you about macro viruses, click Enable Macros.

If a message about Visual Basic modules appears, click OK.

  7. On the File menu, click Save As.

  8. In the file name box, type "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates \Spreadsheet Solutions\Loan.xlt" (without the quotation marks), and then click save.

The Loan.xlt template is saved in the Microsoft Excel 97 file format. Repeat these steps for additional templates that you want to convert.

  9. Click Close on the File menu.

NOTE: The template, LOAN.XLT is an amortization schedule.
