The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you click a row or column divider in Microsoft Excel, all open workbooks are unexpectedly recalculated.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:

  • Calculation for the active workbook is set to Automatic.

        -and-

  • You click the row or column divider but do not resize the column or row.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To prevent Microsoft Excel from recalculating values when you click the row or column header, set the calculation mode to Manual. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Calculation tab. Click Manual to select the manual calculation mode.

NOTE: With the manual calculation mode, formulas are not recalculated automatically. This may cause formulas to appear incorrect. To recalculate the values on the sheet at any time, press F9.
