XL97: Dr. Watson Error Inserting Map into Worksheet

Last reviewed: May 5, 1997

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Windows NT versions 3.51, 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a Microsoft Map object into a worksheet, you may receive the following Dr. Watson for Windows NT error message:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is
   being generated.

   MSMAP.exe

Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address 0x10066c52

After you click OK, Microsoft Excel may become unstable.

Also, if you try to shut down the computer or log on as a different user, you may receive the following error:

   Cannot Quit Microsoft Excel

If you leave this error message displayed on the screen, the following error message appears:

This Windows application cannot respond to the End Task request.
It may be busy, waiting for a response from you, or it may have
   Stopped responding.

If you click End Task in this dialog box, you can then shut down or log on as a different user.

CAUSE

You may receive the first error message when you try to insert a map object in a worksheet if you do not have write permission to the Winnt folder (the default folder in which Windows NT is installed). Because the Map program attempts to write temporary files in this folder, the process fails if you do not have sufficient permissions.

After quitting Microsoft Excel, you may receive the other error messages because the process for Microsoft Excel has not completely ended.

RESOLUTION

To successfully create a map in Microsoft Excel under Microsoft Windows NT, you must be granted at least read and write permissions to the Winnt folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
