SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Excel 97 worksheet in your Internet browser and click a macro button, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation
   and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program
   vendor.

If you click Details, receive the following message:

   module EXCEL.EXE at 0137:3047ad12.

If you click Close, Microsoft Excel shuts down, and your Internet browser does not refresh correctly or stops responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  • You open one of the following sample Spreadsheet Solutions templates that ship with Microsoft Office:

          Expenses Statement.xlt
          Invoice.xlt
          Purchase Order.xlt

        -and-

  • You click the Customize button or one of the other macro buttons in the template.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The Spreadsheet Solutions templates are sample files that can be used in Microsoft Excel 97. The templates are installed with Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Office and are provided as sample solutions for common business needs, such as expenses statements, invoices, and purchase orders. These templates contain macros that are run from buttons on the worksheets.

However, when you are viewing one of the templates within Microsoft Internet Explorer or your Internet browser and click a macro button, you receive the error message mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
