XL97: Error Message Appears Creating Custom Chart Type

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a user-defined custom chart type in Microsoft Excel 97, the following error message appears:

   Microsoft Excel cannot save the user-defined chart gallery in
   the folder specified. Save the gallery elsewhere now, and use
   the Gallery Location tool to specify a different folder.

When you click OK, you are prompted to save the Xlusrgal.xls file in the default documents folder (usually C:\My Documents).

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  • You log on to Microsoft Windows as one user, install Microsoft Excel 97 (or Microsoft Office 97), and then chose the "Run from Network Server" option.

        -and-
    
  • You log off, and another user logs on to Microsoft Windows, runs Microsoft Excel 97, and then attempts to create a user-defined chart type.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, install Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel SR-1.

In Microsoft Excel, you can create a custom chart type. With a custom chart type, you can specify the custom formatting and options you want to include for a particular chart style. Custom chart types you add are stored in the Xlusrgal.xls file in the location specified in the GalleryPath registry setting for Microsoft Excel 97.

The gallery location tools allow you to specify where Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Graph look for custom chart gallery files. You can obtain this free utility on the Web. To do this, use a Web browser to go to the following Microsoft Web site:
