XL: Headers/Footers Fail to Reflect Embedded Chart Name

SYMPTOMS

If you use a header or footer for a worksheet that contains an embedded chart, the name of the chart in the header or footer may not correspond to the name of the chart.

CAUSE

Microsoft Excel uses the original name of the embedded chart in headers and footers. For example, if you create an embedded chart in Sheet1 of a new workbook, the name of the chart is Chart 1. This is the name used in headers and footers.

RESOLUTION

To rename charts so that the header or footer for the chart is updated, use a chart sheet instead of an embedded chart. When you rename the tab on a chart sheet, the name used in a header or footer is automatically updated.

To move an embedded chart to a chart sheet, use the following appropriate method.

Microsoft Excel 97 and Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

To move the embedded chart, follow these steps:

1. Click once on the embedded chart to switch to it.

2. On the Chart menu, click Location.

3. In the Chart Location dialog box, click As New Sheet, type the name for the chart sheet in the box next to the option, and then click OK.

Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0

To move the embedded chart, follow these steps:

1. Select any empty cell in a worksheet and press F11.

   This creates an empty chart sheet.

2. Double-click the embedded chart to switch to it.

3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.

4. Click the chart sheet.

5. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
