XL97: MS Excel Does Not Resume Calculation After Halting

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Excel 97 stops calculating formulas in a workbook even though you are using automatic calculation. Microsoft Excel 97 fails to resume calculating formulas after a few seconds of inactivity.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you perform one of the following actions while Microsoft Excel is recalculating formulas:

  • You select a cell or a range of cells.

        -or-
    
  • You switch to a different worksheet.

        -or-
    
  • You switch to a different workbook.

        -or-
    
  • You click a menu item.

        -or-
    
  • You click a toolbar button.

        -or-
    
  • You move or resize a window.

        -or-
    
  • You start the Microsoft Office Assistant.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, install Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

To work around this problem, press F9 and resume calculation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel 97 SR-1.
