Last reviewed: January 7, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you create multilevel subtotals for data, the totals appear in the incorrect order (staggered incorrectly) and may exclude grand totals for some functions.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  • You create multilevel subtotals by using the Subtotals command on the Data menu or run a Visual Basic for Applications macro to create subtotals with multilevel outlines.

        -and-

  • You clear the Summary Below Data check box in the Subtotals dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, click to select the Summary Below Data check box in the Subtotal dialog box.

If you are using a Visual Basic macro to create your subtotals, set the optional SummaryBelowData argument to True or use the xlSummaryBelow constant. The following macro gives an example of this argument:

   Selection.Subtotal GroupBy:=1, Function:=xlSum, TotalList:=Array(3), _
   Replace:=False, PageBreaks:=False, SummaryBelowData:=xlSummaryBelow

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
