XL97: GET.DOCUMENT Function Returns Incorrect Document Name

Last reviewed: January 7, 1998
Article ID: Q175984
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you run a macro to return the name of the active workbook, the macro returns the wrong name.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  • You run an Excel 4.0 macro that uses the GET.DOCUMENT(68) macro function.

        -and-

  • The macro calls a function or subroutine that refers to or changes the Visible property of the document window.

This problem occurs because the Visible property returns information that the GET.DOCUMENT does not interpret correctly.

WORKAROUND

Microsoft provides programming examples for illustration only, without warranty either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and/or fitness for a particular purpose. This article assumes that you are familiar with the programming language being demonstrated and the tools used to create and debug procedures. Microsoft support engineers can help explain the functionality of a particular procedure, but they will not modify these examples to provide added functionality or construct procedures to meet your specific needs. For more information about the support options available from Microsoft, please see the following page on the World Wide Web:

To work around this problem, use a Visual Basic for Applications procedure instead of the Excel 4.0 macro. The following procedure in Visual Basic returns the name of the current workbook in a message box:

   Sub GetBookName()

      MsgBox ActiveWorkbook.Name

   End Sub

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel 97, the Excel 4.0 macro command GET.DOCUMENT(68) returns the name of the current workbook that contains the active worksheet. Because you can share a worksheet between different workbooks in Excel 4.0, the GET.DOCUMENT function may return the name of more than one workbook. In Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and later, worksheets cannot be shared between different workbooks; however, the GET.DOCUMENT function may incorrectly return the name of another open workbook.
