XL98: Header and Footer Not Saved in Lotus 1-2-3 File Formats

Last reviewed: February 2, 1998
Article ID: Q176007
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you save a file in the Lotus 1-2-3 file format in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, and then reopen it, the header and footer may be missing or corrupted.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you save the file in the following file formats:

   WK3 (1-2-3)
   WK1 (1-2-3)
   WKS (1-2-3)

WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, save the file in the one of the following file formats:

   WK3,FM3 (1-2-3)
   WK1,FMT (1-2-3)
   WK1,ALL (1-2-3)

When you save the file in one of these formats, two files are created. One file contains the formulas and values that are in the worksheet while the other file contains the formatting you used in the worksheet. You must include both files if you want to distribute this workbook to another user.

The following table lists the files that Microsoft Excel saves with each file format. In this example, the file that is saved is named "Mybook."

   File format File names
   ---------------------------------------

   WK3,FM3 (1-2-3) Mybook, Mybook.fm3
   WK1,FMT (1-2-3) Mybook, Mybook.fmt
   WK1,ALL (1-2-3) Mybook, Mybook.all

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
