The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, if you click Exit on the File menu or if you press ALT+F4, Microsoft Excel may quit without prompting you to save changes to unsaved workbooks.

The same problem may occur in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition if you click Quit on the File menu or if you press COMMAND+Q.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You insert a hyperlink in a new workbook by clicking Hyperlink on the Insert menu. When you are prompted to save the workbook, you click No or Don't Save.

        -and-

  • You click the hyperlink. When you are again prompted to save the workbook, you click No or Don't Save.

        -and-

  • You switch back to Microsoft Excel.

        -and-

  • You click Exit on the File menu or press ALT+F4 in Microsoft Excel for Windows, or you click Quit on the File menu or press COMMAND+Q in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh.

The changes to the workbook are not saved, however, when Microsoft Excel quits, you do not have the opportunity to save the workbook.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, save the workbook when you are prompted by Microsoft Excel. Insert hyperlinks only in workbooks that you saved at least once.

STATUS
