The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, when you click Finish in step 4 of the Internet Assistant Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

The directory you selected is protected (you might have read-only
   access to the server).

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you receive the following error message:

The wizard can not save the file to the location you specified.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the location that you specify in the File Path box is a read-only location, for example, a folder on a network server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, specify a location to which you have full access in the File Path box. If you are unable to specify such a location, do either of the following:

  • Specify a folder to which you have full access on your computer.

        -or-

  • Click Cancel.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you click Save As HTML on the File menu, the Internet Assistant Wizard appears and guides you through the steps of saving a range in a worksheet as a new Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) file or as a table in an existing HTML file. You must have full access to the location in which you are saving the HTML file. If you do not, you receive one of the error messages in the "Symptoms" section in this article.
