XL97: AutoComplete Fails After 102 Rows Past Last Occurrence

Last reviewed: January 9, 1998
Article ID: Q177423
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

If there are more than 102 rows since the last occurrence of an item in a list, AutoComplete will not work unless you are within 50 rows of the last occurrence of the item. However, the Pick From List feature works correctly.

NOTE: AutoComplete also will not work at 102 rows after the occurrence of the item if that cell is not blank.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if there are more than 102 non-blank rows in a column since an item last occurred.

WORKAROUND

You can select from a list of entries already in the column. To display the list, press ALT+DOWN ARROW to display the list, or right-click the cell, and then click Pick From List on the shortcut menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
