XL97: Pie Chart Slices Don't Match Legend in Printout

Last reviewed: January 9, 1998
Article ID: Q177528
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you view a pie chart in print preview or print it, the legend colors do not match the pie slice colors.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You create a pie chart.

        -and-

  • You click Page Setup on the File menu, click the Chart tab, and select the "Print in Black and White" check box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, format the pattern for each pie slice so that the area uses a specific color instead of the Automatic setting. Note that you can use the same pattern that is used for the Automatic setting. To set the area pattern for each pie slice, follow these steps:

  1. With the pie chart selected, click the pie once to select the entire data series.

This step selects the entire pie chart.

  2. Click a pie slice once to select that data point (pie slice).

  3. Click Selected Data Point on the Format menu.

  4. Click the Patterns tab. Under Area, click the color that is selected, and then click OK.

  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for all data points (pie slices).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
