OFF97: Inserting MS Excel Object Causes Errors

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Microsoft Excel object into another program, you may receive an error similar to the following:

  • Dr. Watson for Windows NT

    An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

    Rpcss.exe Exception:access violation(0xc0000005), Address: 0x0212134d

    -or-

  • The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved or renamed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You are using Microsoft Excel 97 under Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0.

    -and-

  • You have previously loaded the Excel AutoSave add-in.

    -and-

  • Excel is not running.

    -and-

  • You try to insert an Excel object into another program.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Start Excel Before Inserting the Object

Ensure that Excel is running before you insert an Excel object into other program.

Method 2: Remove the Excel AutoSave Add-In

To remove the add-in, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Add-Ins.

  2. Click to clear the AutoSave check box.

  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
