XL98: Fill Colors Changed to Black or Not Saved in WK3 File

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Lotus 1-2-3 Release 3 format file in Microsoft Excel 98, the fill color of a range of cells may be changed to black. If you open the file in Lotus 1-2-3, the cells are no longer formatted with a fill color.

CAUSE

The problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you create a worksheet and apply a fill color to a range of cells in the worksheet.

    NOTE: To apply a fill color, follow these steps:

        1. Select the cell range.
    

        2. Click Cells on the Format menu.
    

        3. Click the Patterns tab, and then click a color.
    

    -and-

  • You click Save As on the File menu and save the file in the "WK3,FM3(1-2-3)" format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

If you apply certain colors to a range of cells, and then save the file in the "WK3,FM3(1-2-3)" file format, the colors may be changed to black. The following colors are changed to black:

   Olive Green
   Dark Green
   Dark Teal
   Gray-80%
   Gray-50%
   Gray-40%
   Gray-25%
   Rose
   Tan
   Light Yellow
   Light Green
   Light Turquoise
   Pale Blue
   Lavender
   White
