XL98: Cannot Insert or Activate Embedded MS PowerPoint Object

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you click Object on the Insert menu, the Object Types list does not include Microsoft PowerPoint Slide or Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation.

If you open a workbook that has been created in another version of Microsoft Excel and contains one or more embedded Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or slide objects, each object appears as a large red "X" or as a picture in the workbook. If you double-click one of the objects, you receive the following error message:

   Cannot start the source application for this object. There may not be
   enough memory available.

CAUSE

These problems occur because Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition does not support embedded Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or slide objects.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
