Excel Err Msg: "Formula Too Long" with Formulas from Muliplan

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 1.x, 2.x, 3.0

SUMMARY

Formulas that work in Microsoft Multiplan may generate a "Formula too long" error message when they are entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. These same formulas may work correctly in Excel versions 1.00, 1.03, 1.04, 1.06, and 1.50 if they are entered into the Excel document through Multiplan.

When opening a binary Multiplan file (that is, one saved in "Normal" rather than SYLK format), the formulas will be accepted and used in their binary (shortened) form instead of being translated into the longer Excel format. Formulas entered directly into Excel spreadsheets are not accepted in binary form.

MORE INFORMATION

Multiplan documents must be saved as SYLK in order to be opened into Excel version 3.00 or 2.20. Therefore, the Multiplan formulas will not be accepted in Excel 3.00 or 2.20 and must be rewritten.
