Excel: File Saving Differences Between Excel, Lotus 1-2-3

SUMMARY

The method Excel uses to write a WK1 file is functionally different from the method used by Lotus 1-2-3.

When a defined-named cell or a range of cells on a worksheet are referenced in functions by direct address, Excel will replace the cell address with names when the file is saved in WK1 format. This process allows maximum file format compatibility between Macintosh Excel and Lotus 1-2-3 version 2.00.

When a defined name referring to a range on a worksheet is deleted, Excel will not automatically substitute the address in dependent formulas. Lotus 1-2-3 will perform the substitution. This is by design in Excel.

When a cell is selected, Lotus 1-2-3 will automatically substitute the name for a cell or range of cells if you create a formula that uses the reference.

When a cell is selected in Excel, automatic name substitution does not occur; Excel allows you to use a name or address as a reference form.
