Gridlines in Excel Appear on Protected Documents

SYMPTOMS

When working with a protected document, cells that are unlocked are denoted by an underline. This underline appears on both the screen and the printed copy in versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than Excel version 3.0. Excel versions 3.0 and 4.0 display the underline, but do not show the underline in print preview or actually print the underline.

STATUS

Later versions of Microsoft Excel do not display or print unlocked cells in a protected document.

WORKAROUNDS

To remove this underlining in versions of Excel earlier than 3.0, (usually for printing purposes), do one of the following:

  • Remove the protection from the document just before printing and restoring after printing is complete.

    -or-

  • Print the worksheet in draft quality.

    -or-

  • Use white gridlines.

Note that the second workaround will provide a lower quality printout without the underlining.
