Excel: Maximum Number of Cells in an ArrayLast reviewed: November 2, 1994Article ID: Q49272 |
The information in this article applies to :
SUMMARYIn Microsoft Excel version 3.00, the maximum number of cells that can be included in an array is approximately 6400. In Microsoft Excel version 2.20, the maximum number of cells that can be included in an array is 1636. Exceeding this limit can cause a function that accepts arrays as arguments to return #NUM!, even though the function is syntactically correct. In most cases, the formula can be rewritten so that it refers to a smaller subportion of the array, or the array can be broken into smaller portions.
MORE INFORMATIONMicrosoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 2.20 and 3.00 manipulate memory in 16K dynamically allocated blocks. Each array element generally takes 1 byte; thus, there is a limit of approximately 1600 units for each block. Excel 2.20 can use one block per array. Excel 3.00 can use up to 64K for array elements.
