Excel 2.20: Plotting XL Chart Using Discontinuous Data

SUMMARY

With Excel 2.20, it is possible to plot an x-y scatter chart even if the data is not in a continuous area.

An example is as follows:

Category or X axis data is in column A, Value or Y axis data is in columns C, E, and G.

  1. Select the data in columns C, E, and G. (Use the COMMAND key to select a discontinuous area.)

  2. Open a new chart.

  3. Select Scatter from the Gallery menu.

  4. Select the type of scatter chart desired, and click OK.

  5. Go back to the worksheet and highlight x-values in column A.

  6. Select Copy from the Edit menu.

  7. Go back to the chart.

  8. Select Paste Special from the Edit menu.

  9. Choose Values in Columns, Categories in First Column, and Replace Existing Categories.

The chart should now be correct.

If the data is in rows, change step 9 to the following: Choose Values in Rows, Categories in First Row, Replace Existing Categories.

Note: The x-values do need to be in a continuous row or column to perform this operation.
