SUMMARY

There are two ways to suppress the decimal places in Pie Chart #6 in Microsoft Excel. To alter the number of digits displayed in this chart, use one of the following procedures:

Method 1

Manually edit each label for all of the percentages. NOTE: The label will no longer be linked to the spreadsheet value; therefore, changing the worksheet percentage will not change the value reflected in the label.

The labels can also be converted to text by nesting the percentage in quotation marks (""). To convert 28.80% to text, use ="28.8%"

Method 2

Add a new column to the spreadsheet, format it to the desired precision, and use that column as labels. An example of this procedure is described below.

MORE INFORMATION

Assume the information for the pie chart is in cells B1:B4 and that A1:A4 are blank. If there is not a blank column to the left of the information, insert one.

          A B
   1 1
   2 2
   3 3
   4 4

  • Enter the formula =B1/SUM($B$1:$B$4) in A1.

  • Select cells A1 through A4 and choose Fill Down from the Edit menu.

  • Select column A and format it as 0% (or whatever format is desired).

  • Select A1 through B4.

  • From the Edit menu, choose Copy.

  • From the File menu, choose New.

  • Select Chart. Choose the OK button.

  • From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.

  • Under Values In, select Columns.

  • Select Categories In First Column.

  • From the Gallery menu, choose Pie and select format 5.

The first column of information is read as labels displaying the percentage of the total for each value. Since these are labels displayed by Microsoft Excel, rather than computed percentages, Microsoft Excel uses the formatting applied to the cell.
