SUMMARY

If ADDINMGR.XLA is added to the XLSTART subdirectory and used to add library macros to the Excel menus, you may experience being unable to prevent the macros from loading after removing them from the ADDINMGR.XLA list.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Duplicate Problem

  1. Move ADDINMGR.XLA to your XLSTART directory.

  2. Start Excel, then go to the Options menu and choose Add-ins.

  3. Select one or more library macros to add to the addin manager.

  4. Exit Excel and restart. Notice that the add-in macros are being called.

  5. Now choose Add-ins from the Options menu and remove the library macros.

  6. Exit Excel and restart.

NOTE: The library macros are being added even though you removed them from the ADDINMGR.XLA file.

This behavior occurs because the ADDINMGR.XLA file will, by default, create a ".BAK" file. This is what causes the addins to be loaded. The ADDINMGR.BAK file still has the macros marked as being loaded automatically, and because Excel loads files in alphabetical order, the ADDINMGR.BAK file is loaded before the ADDINMGR.XLA file.

Workaround

  1. Hold down SHIFT while you open the ADDINMGR.XLA file from the recent file list in the File menu.

  2. Choose Unhide from the Window menu and select the ADDINMGR.XLA file.

  3. From the File menu choose Save As and then select Options.

  4. Uncheck the "Backup" option.

  5. Save the file.

Now the ADDINMGR.XLA file can be left in any directory, and it will be able to add and remove library macros correctly.
