Q+E: Allow Editing Command Unavailable on Novell NetworkLast reviewed: November 2, 1994Article ID: Q75907 |

SUMMARYThe Allow Editing command under the Edit menu of Microsoft Q+E version 3.0 may be unavailable (dimmed) when you open a dBASE file stored on a Novell server. In most cases, you will be allowed to edit the file if you log in with Supervisor privileges. You will also be able to edit the dBASE file if you open it in Microsoft Excel. This is not limited to Novell Networks; it also occurs with Banyan Vines Networks and Lanman. Note: This information only applies to dBASE files. Text and Microsoft Excel files cannot be edited by Q+E. For more information on the limitations of specific drivers, refer to the appendices of your "Q+E for Microsoft Excel User's Guide."
MORE INFORMATIONThe Allow Editing option is unavailable because Q+E is unable to create a temporary file that it requires. It attempts to create this temporary file in the root directory of the drive on which the QE.EXE program resides. If you do not have create and erase rights to this root directory, Q+E fails to create a temporary file and the Allow Editing option is unavailable.
WorkaroundNormally, you would not want to give the user privileges to create and erase files in the root directory. As a workaround, use the Novell Map Root option and map the user to a directory above the QE.EXE file where the user will be given create and erase privileges. For example:
