ALT+LETTER Does Not Change Field Selection in Custom Dialog

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2, versions 2.2, 2.21, and 3.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, when you press ALT+LETTER, where LETTER is the underlined letter, the field selection may not change in a custom dialog box if all of the static text type 5 fields are listed before the edit box type 6 fields in the dialog box description.

Note that in Microsoft Excel version 5.0, this is not an issue when you create a custom dialog box on a dialog sheet.

In versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than version 5.0, this will occur if the static text type 5 fields were all created first in the Dialog Editor.

MORE INFORMATION

In order to use the ALT+LETTER keys to select a text box in a custom dialog box, make sure that each edit box type 6 field is listed immediately following the corresponding static text type 5 field in the dialog box description.

To properly use the Dialog Editor in versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than version 5.0 to create a custom dialog box, such as a custom data form, where pressing ALT+LETTER changes the field selection, create a static text type 5 field and then an edit box type 6 field for each field in your database.

Note that the Dialog Editor is a separate application provided with versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than version 5.0. For information on creating custom data forms with the Dialog Editor, refer to "Creating a Custom Dialog Box" in chapter 20 of the "Microsoft Excel User's Guide" for version 3.0 as well as "Creating a Custom Data Form" in chapter 9 of the "Microsoft Excel User's Guide" for version 3.0.
