Excel: Names Defined as Formulas Don't Appear in Goto List

Last reviewed: November 30, 1994

Summary:

In Microsoft Excel, names defined as formulas do not display in the Goto list in the Goto dialog box as do names defined as simple references. This is true even if the formula returns a valid reference. However, Goto will still select a name defined as a formula if the name is typed in the Refers To box.

The following example illustrates both the problem and the workaround:

  1. Define Range1 as =$A$1:$A$10.

  2. Define Range2 as =INDIRECT("$B$1:$B$10").

  3. From the Formula menu, choose Goto. Although Range1 appears as expected, Range2 does not appear in the Goto list.

  4. Type "Range2" (without quotation marks) in the Refers To box and choose the OK button.

The cells B1:B10 will be selected just as if Range2 had been selected from the list.
