Excel: Print Quality Doesn't Hold with Dot Matrix Printer

Last reviewed: November 4, 1994
Article ID: Q81764
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

The Print Quality setting reverts back to the initial setting after printing to a dot matrix printer in Microsoft Excel. After changing the Print Quality setting to a different value, the worksheet will print at the new setting. The Print Quality setting will revert back to the original setting if you print the worksheet again.

MORE INFORMATION

When you choose Print from the File menu, Excel displays a Print dialog box that includes an option for Print Quality. You can change the Print Quality setting in this dialog box, but it will not stay after your print job is completed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. This problem was corrected in version 5.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows.

WORKAROUND

You can get the Print Quality setting to stay by setting it in the Printer Setup dialog box instead of the Print dialog box. To set the Print Quality choose Page Setup from the File menu. Select the Printer Setup button in the lower right corner of the Page Setup dialog box. Select the Setup button in the Printer Setup dialog box and select the Print Quality setting you want from the Resolution list box. Select OK on all three dialog boxes to return to Excel.
