The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0, attempting to enter a non-integer font size, for example 8.5, in the Format Font dialog box will result in the error, "Size Must Be Between 1 and 409 Points."

STATUS

Excel for Windows version 5.0 does not use the COMMDLG.DLL to derive available font point sizes. This problem does not occur in version 3.0, which also did not use COMMDLG.DLL.

CAUSE

Excel 4.0 derives the available font point sizes from the Windows COMMDLG.DLL. This .DLL does not support non-integer font point sizes. A similar error will occur with any application that utilizes COMMDLG.DLL, for example, Microsoft Write running with Windows 3.1.
