Last reviewed: November 24, 1997
Article ID: Q86295

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 1.x, 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2, versions 2.2, 3.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, you cannot directly import the following spreadsheets:

If you are using Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows
   ------------------------------------------------

    - A Symphony file if it is in the .WR1 file format.

If you are using Microsoft Excel 4.x
or Microsoft Excel 5.0 for the Macintosh
   ----------------------------------------

    - A Symphony file if it is in the .WR1 file format.
    - A Quattro Pro spreadsheet if it is in the .WQ1 file format

WORKAROUND

To open a .WR1 or .WQ1 file in Microsoft Excel, first open it in Lotus 1-2-3, save it in a Lotus 1-2-3 file format, and then open it in Microsoft Excel.

NOTE: You cannot open .WB1 files in Microsoft Excel version 5.0.

Saving the file in Lotus 1-2-3

To save a Quattro Pro file in a Lotus 1-2-3 file format, follow these steps:

  1. In Quattro Pro, open the file you want to open in Microsoft Excel.

  2. On the File menu, click Save As.

  3. Type the name of the file and use either the .WK3, .WK1, or .WKS file name extension. (You can also save the file in the .SLK or .DBF format).

Note that saving a Quattro Pro for Windows file in the .WK3 file format seems to retain more of the advanced settings. The .WK1 and .WKS formats may not retain the sheet settings and functions.

To save a Lotus Symphony file in the .WK3, .WK1, or .WKS file format, follow these steps:

  1. In Lotus 1-2-3, open the file you want to open in Microsoft Excel.

  2. Press the F9 key to recalculate the worksheet.

  3. Click File Save.

  4. Type the full path of the directory in which you want to save the file followed by the file name and the .WK3, .WK1, or .WKS file name extension.

Opening the .WK3, .WK1, or .WKS File in Microsoft Excel

To open the newly saved file in Microsoft Excel, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Open.

  2. Switch to the directory that contains the file you want to open.

  3. In the File Name box, type "*.wk*" (without the quotation marks), or click Lotus 1-2-3 in the List Files Of Type box to locate the file.

  4. Select the file in the File Name box and click OK.
