Excel: Cell Alignment Changes on Calculation

Last reviewed: November 29, 1994

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel for Windows, the vertical alignment of a numeric value in a cell may change when the formula in that cell recalculates.

This occurs if the cell is formatted with the Wrap Text option enabled and vertical alignment set to Bottom (the default setting).

MORE INFORMATION

If the numeric value in a cell changes when the formula in that cell recalculates, Excel automatically realigns the value to the top of the cell.

If you set the vertical alignment format for the cell to Center or Top, the alignment won't change when the formula recalculates.

To change cell alignment:

  1. Select the cell or cells you want to format.

  2. From the Format menu, choose Alignment.

  3. In the Alignment dialog box, select the options you want.

  4. Choose the OK button.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. We are researching this problem, and will post more information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
