Excel: Missing Help Topic for Illegal Reference Argument

• Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0 and 4.0a

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, the Help topic, "Illegal reference argument at: [reference]" is missing. If you select the topic:

   Illegal reference argument at: [reference]

In version 4.0a, if you select the topic, WINHELP.EXE generates a dialog box that says "Help Topic does not exist."

When you choose the Help button in the Macro Error dialog box, Microsoft Excel Help displays a Help screen that provides information on the Macro Error dialog box along with additional topics which you can select for more information.

The correct topic is:

   Illegal Reference Argument At:

   The macro function contains an error at the specified cell.
   In the macro function, check the reference argument at the
   specified cell and try again.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0 and 4.0a. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
