Excel: GP Fault Opening Large Number of Text Files

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if you open a large number of text files (over 40), Microsoft Excel may stop responding (hang). In Microsoft Excel for Windows the following message is displayed:

   Excel caused a General Protection Fault in Module EXCEL.EXE

There is currently no workaround for this problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. We are researching this problem, and will post more information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
