XL: Cannot Access Local Databases with Data Access Macro

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

You cannot use the Microsoft Excel Data Access Macro (DAM) to query local databases (databases that are located on your own computer). The DAM will not access local databases because it uses the Macintosh Data Access Language (DAL) which only allows Microsoft Excel and the DAM to access remote databases (databases that are stored somewhere other than your computer).

In order to use the Microsoft Excel Data Access Macro (DAM) to access a local Macintosh database you must use a special third-party version of the DAL software.

MORE INFORMATION

The DAM is a front-end viewer for Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh and the DAL client-server database engine. The DAM passes American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Structured Query Language (SQL) queries to the DAL client software which then passes them on to the DAL server. (The DAL server is a host computer containing the DAL server software, a particular database management system (DBMS), and specific data tables.)

Some third-party manufacturers offer their own versions of DAL software that allows access to local files. EveryWare Development Corporation, for example, makes the Butler DAL Server. For more information about the Butler DAL Server, contact:
