SUMMARY

When using Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) Pathworks Networks version 4.0 or later, a net drive can be configured as a DISK SERVICE or a FILE SERVICE. Microsoft Windows version 3.1 treats the DEC Pathworks versions 4.x DISK SERVICE to be a local disk drive and the FILE SERVICE to be a network drive.

Because Microsoft Windows version 3.1 treats the DISK SERVICE drive as a local disk drive, when you attempt do a server installation of Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for Windows on a net drive configured as DISK SERVICE, only the Complete, Custom and Minimum installation options will be available. To do a network server installation using DEC Pathworks version 4.x, the network drive must be reconfigured to be FILE SERVICE.
