  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a

SUMMARY

When you select the Ignore Words In UPPERCASE check box in the Spelling dialog box, this option remains selected until you clear it. Since the Spelling dialog box appears only when the Spelling tool suspects a misspelled word, this feature of the Spelling tool may be inconvenient if you switch to a document that contains text formatted in all uppercase letters and you want to be able to check the spelling of that document.

Workarounds

Clear the Ignore Words In UPPERCASE Check Box

To change the Ignore Words In UPPERCASE option while you are running Microsoft Excel:

  1. In any cell, enter a misspelled word that is formatted in lowercase letters.

  2. From the Options menu, choose Spelling.

The Spelling command will select the misspelled word and the Spelling dialog box will appear.

  3. In the Spelling dialog box, clear the Ignore Words In UPPERCASE check box.

The Spelling command will now check all words in your document.

Modify the EXCEL4.INI File

You can also change the Ignore Words In UPPERCASE option by changing the [Spell Checker] section of the EXCEL4.INI file from

   [Spell Checker]
   Ignore Caps=1

to:

   [Spell Checker]
   Ignore Caps=0

Where Ignore Caps=0 sets the option to off (false), and Ignore Caps=1 sets the option to on (true).
