Last reviewed: February 2, 1998
Article ID: Q99981

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Print Report command, you receive the following error message if the worksheet cells have been protected:

Cannot print or edit reports from a protected document.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design in Microsoft Excel. The Print Report command, which is available when you load the Report Manager add-in file Report.xla, gives you the ability to print several views and scenarios of a worksheet in succession. Because changing scenarios means changing the contents of cells, this operation cannot be done on worksheet where the cells are protected.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate following method to unprotect the document.

Microsoft Excel Versions 5.0 and Later

On the Tools menu, point to Protection, and then click Unprotect Sheet.

Note that you can protect the worksheet objects and scenarios without receiving the error message when you use the Print Report command.

Microsoft Excel Version 4.0

On the Options menu, click Unprotect Document.

Note that you can protect the worksheet objects and windows without receiving the error message when you use the Print Report command.
