XCON: MTA Terminates After Receiving Mail from Zoomit Gateway

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange message transfer agent (MTA) may terminate unexpectedly after receiving a message over an X.400 connector from a Zoomit gateway. The following sequence of events may be logged in the application event log:

CAUSE

The Zoomit gateway may have sent a message with an improperly encoded content length. Improperly encoded messages may cause the MTA to terminate unexpectedly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 4.0. Supported fixes for both versions are now available, but have not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support Services for more information.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Exchange 5.0 Server U.S. Service Pack.
