XFOR: MSMI Stops Without Error

Last reviewed: September 11, 1997
Article ID: Q151431

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server, versions 4.0 and 5.0

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Mail Connector interchange (MSMI) service shuts down without logging an error in the event log or generating Drwtsn32.log file.

CAUSE

A handled exception in CSfsEms::vClose function results in a clean shutdown of the MSExchangeMSMI service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 4.0. A supported fix to this problem is in development, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information on the availability of this fix.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Exchange 5.0 Server U.S. Service Pack. For information on obtaining the service pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):

   S E R V P A C K

MORE INFORMATION

The fix changes the exception filter to never handle exceptions for the mailer thread. This allows the exception to trigger the "just in time" (JIT) debugger (Drwtsn32.exe in Windows NT by default).

To check what debugger your Windows NT system has configured as the JIT debugger, check the following registry key:

     HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug\
     Debugger:REG_SZ:<path-to-debugger-EXE>

Some development tools and third-party applications may modify this key to a different debugger application. To re-initialize Drwtsn32.exe as the JIT Debugger:
  • At a console prompt type:

    DRWTSN32 -i
