XCLN: Restart Fails When Installing Exchange with SMS

Last reviewed: January 20, 1998
Article ID: Q157692
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 95
  • Microsoft SMS

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 95 using Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS), the following dialog box

   You must restart your computer for installation to complete

does not go away when you click Restart.

This only occurs the first time you install the Microsoft Exchange client on Windows 95 workstations. If you install the Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 95, remove it, and reinstall it using SMS, the problem does not occur because a restart is not be required and thus the dialog box does not appear.

RESOLUTION

  1. Add the following statement to the Exwin95.pdf file:

          SynchronousSystemExitRequired=TRUE

    The typical section of the Exwin95.pdf file will then appear as follows:

          [Typical Setup]
          CommandLine=setup.exe /Q1
          CommandName=Typical
          UserInputRequired=FALSE
          SupportedPlatforms=Windows95
          SynchronousSystemExitRequired=TRUE

  2. Using SMS version 1.1 or 1.2, install the Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

When the installation appears to be complete, the following dialog box

   You must restart your computer for installation to complete

appears with the Restart and Exit buttons. If you click the Restart button, the computer does not restart and the dialog box does not disappear. If you click the Exit button, the following dialog box appears:

   Installation was not successfully completed. Registry database was not
   updated.

If you choose to continue and manually restart the computer, the Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 95 works properly.
