  • Microsoft Exchange Server versions 4.0 and 5.0

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Server Microsoft Mail interchange (MSMI) stops and may log the following events in the Windows NT Event Viewer Application log:

   MSExchangeMSMI Event ID 2380:
   Source: MSMI
   Category: SessionError
Description: A memory access violation occurs that prevents further
   processing of a messsage

   MSExchangeMSMI Event ID 10003:
   Source: MSMI
   Category: SessionError
Description: Fatal Assert: File sfsems.cpp line 837. Mailer thread
failed.

CAUSE

The MSMI is attempting to log an event for an NDR of a message with invalid sender and recipients.

WORKAROUND

Resetting the INQUEUE3 Key and Mbg file on the shadow post office will allow the MSMI to restart, but will result in the loss of any messages in the queue.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server, versions 4.0 and 5.0.

For Microsoft Exchange Server, version 4.0, we are currently researching this problem and will post more information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available. A supported fix is now available for Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.0, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.
