PRB: F1901 "Program Too Large for Memory" Compilation Error

SYMPTOMS

An attempt to compile an application fails and the compiler generates the following message: 

       F1901: program too large for memory

CAUSE

The combination of heap space and stack space required to compile the program is too large for the memory available in the computer.

RESOLUTION

To address this situation, compile the application with the high-capacity compiler F1L.EXE. Modify the compiler command line to specify the /B1 option. F1L.EXE is an alternate first pass for the compiler that places the symbol table into the FAR HEAP. If F1L is unable to process a source module, decompose the source file into two or more pieces, compile each separately, and link the application together.

FORTRAN version 5.0 distributes F1L.EXE on disk 13, the High Capacity Compiler Disk.

The following compiler command line demonstrates using the high- capacity FORTRAN compiler: 

   FL /B1 C:\FORTRAN\BIN\F1L.EXE MYAPP.FOR
To make the high-capacity compiler the default, rename F1L.EXE as F1.EXE.

By default, FORTRAN version 5.1 installs the F1L.EXE file in the C:\FORTRAN\BINB directory. The switch should read: 

  FL /B1 C:\FORTRAN\BINB\F1L.EXE MYAPP.FOR
