PRB: Error Appending with Index Longer Than 140 Characters

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FoxPro for MS-DOS, version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

Appending records to a database that has an index tag longer than 140 characters causes an error in FoxPro version 2.0. In the Extended version of FoxPro (FOXPROX.EXE), FoxPro may abruptly terminate with register information appearing on the screen, and control is returned to MS-DOS. In the Standard version of FoxPro, the computer and keyboard lock up, and you must perform a cold boot.

CAUSE

The error will usually occur after you append a record that contains 140 characters in the index tag. The 140 characters can be in one field or in a combination of fields.

RESOLUTION

You may be able to avoid this problem by manually reindexing before appending the record; however, this does not always solve the problem.
