PRB: "End of File Encountered" with Empty Database

Last reviewed: April 29, 1996
Article ID: Q96297
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FoxPro for Windows, versions 2.5 and 2.5a
  • Microsoft FoxPro for MS-DOS, versions 2.0, 2.5, and 2.5a
  • Microsoft FoxPro for Macintosh, version 2.5b

SYMPTOMS

When you are running an .SPR file with an empty database, an "End of file encountered" error message will be displayed. The line flagged for the error will be a READ CYCLE command.

CAUSE

When FoxPro tries to execute the READ CYCLE command, it cannot find any records to display for editing; hence, the error message appears.

RESOLUTION

Before running a screen or program that issues a READ CYCLE command, append a blank record (using the APPEND BLANK command) or add a valid record to the database.
