The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FoxPro for MS-DOS, versions 2.5 and 2.5a

The "Installation and Configuration" manual for FoxPro versions 2.5 and later for MS-DOS recommends removing SMARTDRV from your CONFIG.SYS file. The manual states "in particular, the \DOUBLE_BUFFER switch seems to adversely impact performance" and further indicates "performance degradation does not seem to occur when SMARTDRV is loaded in AUTOEXEC.BAT."

The section in the manual concerning SMARTDrive refers to SMARTDRV.SYS version 4.0. Note that SMARTDRV.SYS version 3.x, which ships with MS-DOS version 5.0, is loaded in your CONFIG.SYS file and cannot be loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

NOTE: SMARTDRV.SYS version 4.0 is the recommended version to use with FoxPro.
