FP1: Authentication Scheme (NTLM) Not Supported Error

Last reviewed: March 17, 1998
Article ID: Q152197
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage, versions 1.1

SYMPTOMS

When you use the FrontPage 1.1 Server Extensions for the Microsoft Internet Information Server, you may receive the following message:

Unable to complete transaction—the server requested authentication
information (userid/password) using an authentication scheme (ntlm) that
   is supported by this tool.

CAUSE

This error may be generated due to incorrect password authentication configuration in the Microsoft Internet Information Server.

WORKAROUND

To configure the Microsoft Internet Information Server so that you can use it with the FrontPage extensions, use the following steps:

  1. In the Microsoft Internet Service Manager, select the WWW Service option.

  2. On the Properties menu, click Service Properties.

  3. In the WWW Service Properties for ServerName dialog box, select the Service tab.

4.Under Password Authentication, select the Basic (Clear Text) check box.

  1. When prompted with the Internet Service Manager Information dialog box, click Yes.

All Windows NT administrators are FrontPage administrators by default. When you are prompted for your login credentials, use your full user account and Windows NT password. (For example, use Domain\Username and Password if your server is not a domain controller, or use Username and Password if your server is a domain controller.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows with Bonus Pack.

MORE INFORMATION

When a protected resource on a Web server is requested before a client login, the Web server will return an "HTTP 401 Access Denied" message, along with a WWW-Authenticate header detailing the types of authentication schemes available. If FrontPage does not receive the WWW-Authenticate header type of "Basic," it will not be able to send the password to the server.
