FP98: Message Reappears After Restarting Computer During Setup

SYMPTOMS

While running the FrontPage Setup program you receive the following message:

   FrontPage 98 setup has updated a shared system file to a more recent
   version.  This newer version is required to install FrontPage.  To
   Complete the installation of this file, please restart your computer
   and then restart FrontPage 98 setup.

When you click OK, your computer restarts. When you restart FrontPage setup, the same message reappears.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the Mfc42.dll file, version 4.2.6068, is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: If You Are Using Windows 95

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

  2. Open the folder that contains the Windows 95 program files. By default this is the C:\Windows folder.

  3. Select the Mfc42.dll file.

  4. On the File menu, click Rename.

  5. Type Mfc42.old, and then press Enter.

  6. Start the FrontPage 98 Setup program. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Method 2: If You Are Using Windows NT

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows NT Explorer.

  2. Open the folder that contains the Windows NT program files. By default this is the C:\Winnt folder.

  3. Select the Mfc42.dll file.

  4. On the File menu, click Rename.

  5. Type Mfc42.old, and then press Enter.

  6. Start the FrontPage 98 Setup program. Follow the instructions on your screen.
