The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.0 to view a Web page that uses the BGSOUND tag (a reference to a background sound file on a Web page), the .wav (audio) file may seem to be downloaded but may not be played.

CAUSE

The server on which the Web page is located is using European Microsoft Windows NT Academic Centre (EMWAC) version .94 for the Hypertext Transfer Protocol Service (HTTPS).

This Beta version of EMWAC can play smaller .wav files referenced with the BGSOUND tag. However, it cannot play .wav files that are larger than 4 megabytes in size.

RESOLUTION

This problem was corrected in EMWAC server version .98. The administrator of the server must upgrade to this updated version.

MORE INFORMATION

HTTP (or HyperText Transfer Protocol) is widely used on the Internet for publishing information with links to other items. It is often referred to as a HyperMedia service because it allows pointers to different media items: text, pictures, sounds, video clips, and so on.

EMWAC Server is public domain HTTP server software developed by the European Microsoft Windows NT Academic Centre.

The server software and more information on its use can be found at the following location:
